January 2014 T-Twister Newsletter
Dear God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference. Amen. HAPPY 2014!!
OK, eating black eyed peas and cornbread on New Year’s Day is a tradition that’s been done in my home since Al and I got married. I honestly don’t remember doing it before then. I’ve been running around on the WEB trying to find out the reason behind this tradition, and have come up with many. Here’s a couple;
During the time of the Pharaohs in ancient Egypt, it was thought that eating the lowly black eyed pea showed their humility before the gods, and saved them from the wrath of their gods.
Another popular idea is that during the Civil War, General Sherman distained the small pea because, to the Union troops, it was animal food. Salt pork and black eyed peas were all that the marauding soldiers left behind in their sweep across the south. The Confederates considered themselves lucky and survived on these meager rations.
Corn bread is representative of pocket money, with the yellow color representing gold, or pocket change.
Anyway, to those of us living in the wonderful Southern states of America, good luck or not, we eat black eyed peas and cornbread cause it’s just good food!
The Christmas party was a good one. Al and I didn’t attend because he was having a bad day, but Ed reported that but 27 people were there. There was a ton of food and it was great to see every one having a good time.
The first general meeting of the year is on Saturday, January 4th, at Casa Lopez. Come meet with us at 10 am, and have breakfast before we get started. There are several items to discuss, including campouts for 2014. If you want to add your input, be sure to be at the meeting!
I’ll be passing around an “update” sheet to get your updated info for the membership list. If I have an incorrect phone number or email address for you, please come and help me out! I want to have new membership lists ready at the March Meeting.
Dues are due! We’re still the best bargain going, only $20.00 for a full year’s family membership. Please get your dues to Ed or Mario ASAP, so your name will be on the 2014 membership list.
Is anyone making any of the usual New Year Resolutions this year? I’m not, ‘cause I never keep them. But I have resolved to be a better Club member this year. It doesn’t take that much effort, for most of us, to attend more meetings, and to participate in more Club activities. We’ve got a great Club that’s beginning to grow. It’s great to see new faces when we’re all together!
Mary
